“First Confession” by Frank O’Connor

 The tale is naratted by Jackie, a seven years old,a boy is must make his first confession before receiving his first communion. A precocious boy,Jackie is distressed because his paternal grandma has moved from the country to live with his family. He is disgusted by the woman’s love of porte beer,her inclination to eat potatoes with her hands,and her favoring his sister,Nora,with an allowance denied him. The boy feels that his sister and grandma side against him and make his life unbearable.

The main character from the story is Jackie. Jackie  has bad character and good character. One example of the bad character that is on the sentence “I made excuses not to let him come into the house, because I could never be sure what she would be up to when we went in.”  The reason is because Jackie think his grandma is the person who shameful and he scared too if his grandma doing something that disgusting. Then,one example of the good character that is on the sentence “Bless me, father, for I have sinned ; this  is my first confession.”  The reason is because it’s the first time for a youg boy is Jackie to confess about his sins,he realizing his attitude to his grandma not a very good. He has a mistakes but he brave to confess his mistakes and try to fix it.

For the setting,there are three setting : setting of place,time and social condition. For the first is setting of place are in the house,in the church and in the chapel. For example of the in the house that is on the sentence “When mother was at work and my grandma made the dinner wouldn’t touch it. Nora once tried to make me,but i hid under the table from her and took the bread-knife wih me for protection. Nora let on to be very indignant(she wasn’t,of course but she knew mother saw through her,so she sides with Gran) and came after me. I lashed out at her with the bread-knife,and after that she left me alone.”

Then,for example of the in the church that is on the sentence “There you are! She said with a yelp of triumph,hurling,me through the church door.”

 “Nora sat in front of me by the confession box.

And the last,for example of the in the chapel that is on the sentence I was scared to death of confession. The day the whole class went i let on to have at toothache,hoping my absence wouldn’t y noticed; but at three  o’clock,just as i was feeling safe,along comes a chap with a message from Mrs.Ryan that i was to go to confession myself on Saturday and be at the chapel for communion with the rest.”

For the second is setting of time,there are in the afternoon and n the night. For example of the in the morning that is on the sentence “I was scared to death of confession. The day the whole class went i let on to have at toothache,hoping my absence wouldn’t y noticed; but at three  o’clock,just as i was feeling safe,along comes a chap with a message from Mrs.Ryan that i was to go to confession myself on Saturday and be at the chapel for communion with the rest.” And for example of the in the night that is on the sentence “when mother was at work and grandma made dinner i wouldn’t touch it.”

For the third is setting of social condition is he always though with his parents to do something good attitude and obey his religion.

            For the point of view from this novel is “I”. One example of the point of view that is on the sentence “Now,girls are supposed to be fastidious,but i was the one who suffered most from this. Nora,my sister,just sucked to the old women for the penny she got every Friday out of  the old-age pension,a think i couldn’t do. I was too honest,that was my trouble,and when i was playing with Bill Connel.the Sergant-Major’s son. And saw my grandma steering up the path with the jug of porter sticking out from beneath her shawl i was mortified. I made excuses not to let him come into the house. Because i could never be sure what she would be up to when we went it”.

            For the plot,the story is about a young boy seven yaers old,getting ready for his first confession in the cathoic church. He is scared of this confession because he wants to kill his grandma,who has recently moved in with the family and can only see his confession being bad,and if he told a bad confession he would burn in the flames of hell. During his confession he admits to all his sins.in the end he is rewarded for this honestly by becoming friends with the priest.

            For the theme in the short story is religion. The short story includes religion element when Jackie makes his confession. In the rules of religion,if the murderer doesn’t make confession before dead,he will go to hell after life. Although Jackie has only plan to kill his grandma,he must make confession in order to be more good. And the priest helps to make him aware of his plan. In the ending of story,he feels very of worry and the world is very good.
