CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background to the study

Language is a very characteristic in the world. Every country has language that is different from other countries. English is an international language that can be used to deal with other country.

Together with spreading of English as an International language, the importance of English education has been widely recognized in countries where English is learned as a foreign language. To support students to learn English language we must help them to fulfill their mental, emotional and social potentials for better language learning experience.

Learning language ia a window to look through the world outside. Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (1995 : 662) defined that language is the system of sounds and word used by human to express their thoughts and feelings. So, the aim of language is to express idea to other people.

In English when people want to learn about reading and writing skills, they have to know and understand about the grammar of the sentences. Scott Thonbury (1991 : 1) said that grammar is the study of what forms (or structure) are possible in a language. The grammatical description is including an account of the meanings that these forms express. In grammatical theories the studies which study about the internal construction of words and combined of words is morphology.

Morphology is the field of linguistic that studies the internal structure of words. In this way, morphology is the branch of linguistics that studies patterns of word – formation within and across language, and attemps to formulate the rules that model of the knowledge of the speaker of that language.

In linguistic, word formation is the creation of a new word. Word formation is sometimes contrasted with semantic change, which is a change in a single words meaning. The line between word formation and semantics changes is sometimes a bit blurry : what one person views as a new use of an old word, another person might view as a word derived from an old one and identical to it in from ; see conversation ( linguistic ). Word formation can also be contrasted with the word formation of expression, though sometimes words can be formed from multi – word phrases; see coumpound and Incorporation ( linguistics ).

For that the reason, the writer had considered that it is important to know about the word formation, because it would be confusing for students who do not know about word formation. The word formation which is modified in the article must be classified to make the reader understand.

To fulfill the students nedd of reading material. In this newspaper there is topic  Illegal Immigrants which includes in educational affairs. By reading the topic Illegal Immigrants the reader found out many words. Those words include word formation.

In this thesis, the writer used morphological analysis for analyzing the processing of forming words through diagram, as a result to know about variations which formed for the word.

Based on the explanation above the writer take this thesis entitled “AN ANALYSIS ON THE MORPHOLOGICAL PROCESS FOUND IN THE ISSUED248 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS EDITOR ONLINE OF JAKARTA POST ON NOVEMBER 2015 “.

1.2    Statements of the Problem

         Based on the above background the problem can be formulated into the following statement:

1.      What types of the word formation process are found in the article of “ Illegal Imigrants “Published in Editor jakarta post on november 2015 ?

1.3    Objectives of the Study

This thesis aimed to elaborate the word formation used in a certain article that is found in jakarta post newspaper. In order to approach the problem systematically, the objectives of the study can be described as follows:

1. To analyze the types of word formation found in the article of Illegal Immigrants in editor jakarta post newspaper.

1.4    Scope of the Study

Formulating and determining the scope of the study is the steps that help the thesis writing. The scope of the problem in this writing is word formation process. In this research the writer gives some limitation. The limitation of this research will be focused on the analysis of the article of  “Illegal Immigrants” published in editor jakarta post newspaper on november 2015.

1.5    Methods of the Study

The method is used to support the research. The method is based on the theoretical statement of any experts by looking for the references in library.

1.5.1 Method of Data Colection

Relevant literatures were chosen and read to get supporting materials for the investigation discussed in this paper. Senu (  1993 : 9  )said that  “ library research is an activity which is done in the library to get supporting data and information about object of the research by the books or another audio visual tools “.

Arikunto  (   1984  :  188  ) said that the use of data collection by documentation is by finding out the data about variable that can be found in notes, transcripts, books, newspaper, magazine, etc.

Library research is also the theoretical research that is done by discussing some relevant literatures according to this study.
